Why Do I Sweat More Than Everyone Else?!

Sweat it out. Don’t stop till you sweat. Don’t sweat it. Blood, sweat & tears. What does it really mean to sweat? Sweating, also known as perspiring, is a natural human process and it’s not something to be ashamed of – until it creates pit stains or darkens your shirt by a shade. It is understandable that one might feel embarrassed by excessive sweat. “Wow. Why are you sweating already?” “Oh dude, your shirt is a whole new shade” Yes, yes maybe we’ve heard these few statements way too often. However, why is it exactly? We can only reply telling them that we perspire easily but have we ever paused to wonder why?

Let’s first try to understand why we perspire to begin with. Without changing this into a biology lesson, we’ll try to break down the main reason. Essentially, when sweat evaporates off your skin, it helps to dissipate the heat from your body, allowing you to cool down. With 2 to 4 million sweat glands, you’re bound to sweat. In fact, maximum sweat rates of an adult can be up to 2–4 liters per hour or 10–14 liters per day. I guess that’s literally sweating buckets.

So now why do some of us sweat more than others? Here are some of the reasons why:

Hyperhidrosis

It’s a real medical concern – excessive sweating. Though heat and emotions may trigger sweat, for people who suffer from hyperhidrosis, they pespire throughout for no particular reason or trigger. As it is a medical condition, it can be treated. From oral medication to laser or surgery, this problem can be solved.

Overweight

It can’t be helped when fat is an insulator that is probably causing your body temperature to raise, hence the perspration. Additionally, when we are mainly sedentary and we start to work out, we will tend to perspire more than those who exercise regularly. Fit people have trained and they perspire more efficiently as a result.

Menopause

Don’t be afraid of this M word but yes, menopause could also be a contributing factor to the sweating. It’s just a natural process and phase.

More Sweat Glands

It’s as it is, some of us are simply born with more sweat glands than others… It’s biological in us and we can’t help it. Maybe we can help ourselves by taking note of the next few preventable pointers.

Coffee Addict

The main culprit here is caffeine. While caffeine keeps us awake, it also keeps us perspiring. Maybe we could put down that coffee for today.

Alcohol a day, keeps the sweat at bay

Other than coffee, alcohol has the same effect. Why do you think you feel heated up when you drink?

Synthetic Fabric

Ever wonder why you perspire a little more while wearing certain clothes? Synthetic fabrics could be a reason why. Such clothes trap heat and of course, you would perspire more. Maybe try finding other fabrics that will allow your skin to breathe a little?

Smoking

Nicotine has an effect on your hormones, skin and brain. Naturally, it could also be the reason why you’re perspiring more.

Stress

Your emotions – fear, anxiety & anger. These are possible reasons as to why you might be perspiring more. Keep your feelings in check from time to time. No doubt under certain situations, you would feel such emotions. However, let’s not let it occur too often. It affects more than just your sweat levels.

Honestly, there’s nothing wrong with sweating a little more. Don’t let society’s labels of “gross”, “unhealthy” or “wrong” stick onto you. If it really concerns you, you can consider cutting down a little bit on the above. And if it really bothers you, you could always go to a doctor for treatment.  Meanwhile, here’s an interesting video we found online.
